Survival Tips 101
From Bob Harris
1 . Always keep your shoes by the beds (for all family members) so that you don't walk on broken glass after a disaster.
2. Fire departments recommend that you have a crow bar under your bed to open a door that may be jammed shut.
3. Keep a spare hide-a-key on your vehicle so that you have a way to utilize your vehicle if your keys are in another part of house and you are unable to reach them during the chaos of an earthquake.
4. Never store plastic water bottles on concrete. Chemicals in concrete leech into and through the plastic, contaminating the water. Use cardboard, carpet or linoleum under the bottles/jugs.
5. Medications: ask your physician for samples or a 2nd Rx for all your medications to put into your emergency kit. Remember to rotate them so they don't expire, and don't store them where the temperature exceeds the recommended environment for those meds.
6. In your earthquake preparedness Grab 'n' Go bag you should have a minimum of 100 one dollar bills plus change, since ATMs and most markets will not have change available. Avoid spending $20 for a $2 item!
7. Always use your refrigerator food first, then the freezer food, then your canned and packaged goods. Keep low-sodium food on hand to reduce thirst and need for extra water.
8. Do not turn off the gas unless you smell or hear gas hissing because the gas company could take days or weeks to get to your house to turn it on.
9. In a major earthquake your main water shut-off valve should be turned OFF to the house so as to not contaminate any drinking water that you can use from the water heater or toilet tanks. Before turning it off, fill up your bathtub with water immediately for a good source of usable water.
